Auf Wiedersehen Wien (Vienna), Dobryden Praha (Prague)

Another late post - this is from Friday. We're in Garmisch GE - more to follow soon!

Well, the hits just keep on coming! Another day started with pouring rain but it ended by 10 AM. It only delayed our departure from the hotel slightly though and we were off to the Sudbahnhof to buy tickets for the train to Prague.

Before we left though, it was off to the Spanish Riding School to watch morning exercise of the Lipizzaner Stallions. They were very cool - we weren’t supposed to take any pictures but I was able to take this video on the sly:

In addition, we couldn’t leave Vienna without seeing the “Blue Danube”!

Here we are at the center of the Danube bridge with a really cool looking church in the background.

The church is located at the “Mexiko Platz” but we never saw a name for it – guess we’ll have to look it up on-line later.

Vicki also needed to do some last minute souvenir shopping so we went back to Karntner Strasse and went in several shops looking for just the right items. However, we let time slip away from us and didn’t leave the area until almost 1:10 for a 1:30 train! I ended up going ahead and running down the street to get our bags out of storage so when Vicki caught up we could just board. Finally got on the train about two minutes before it left! I was out of breath and sweating like one of those horses we saw at the Spanish Riding School!

The train ride was uneventful and the countryside was pretty:

Felt really weird going into a former Eastern Block country though. The last time I was in Europe, these guys were the enemy! Went back to the dining car and met a Czech that had lived in Minnesota who was ordering a Budweiser beer – not the American version, but the Czech Budweiser that has been brewed in the same place for over 400 years!

As we pulled into the Prague station and got off the train, we started thinking about finding a room for the night. Fortunately, we didn’t have to worry – there are lots of rooms available! We finally took a room in a residence call called U Plebana – got a nice room with a shared kitchen and bath for 1,100 Kc (E40.00), the cheapest hotel we’ve stayed in during the trip.

First thing we did after getting cleaned up from the trip was call Vojta and his friend Marek to let them know we were in town. Both were busy today so we made arrangements to see them tomorrow. So we went out to find a restaurant for supper. Boy, I REALLY like Czech cooking! I had a “meat platter” with chicken, pork and venison with potato and bread dumplings chased down with a couple of local Pils and Vicki had Goulash with mashed potatoes – both were excellent and the whole meal cost us under 25E. That’s less than one person’s meal in Paris – the Czech Republic really is one of the best bargains in Europe! It’s also a beautiful city – here’s a shot of the Tyn Church and the Golz-Kinsky Palace at night:

Will post more tomorrow as we see the city but for now it’s after midnight again so nashiedanau for tonight!
